Beginning to Respond

Choose a short passage from your novel that made an impact on you as you read it, that made you stop and think maybe even say "Oh wow" to yourself.  It may have made you stop and think because you made a personal connection. It may have made you wonder and ask a question. It may have made you react in some emotional way to the words on the paper.  In your response, quote the passage and list the page number that it can be found on.  Explain, in detail, why you chose this passage, what reason did you have that made you stop and think or had you reacting in some way. Include your feelings and emotions as well as state any connections you made (text to self, text to text, text to world). An example  from another novel of how to start is this:
"Big signs were posted at the pool saying"No Jews or Dogs Allowed". pg 14
As I read this passage I couldn't believe that this could happen. How could the Jewish even be compared to dogs?"

  10. Pg.12-13 "Now you are special forever," Lise had told her once,"because you have been greeted by a king." I would feel so special and happy if I was Anne-marie and my big sister had told that.

Pg."The boy looked right at the soldier, and he said,'All of Denmark is his bodyguard.' "
I had shivers and was wondering if all of Denmark would die for the king would he die for all of Denmark? The soldiers are taking over his country and so far is just watching his country being taken away from him and being destroyed. Would the king die for the jews? Is he going to protect them?

Hirsch sells thred and buttons, see if you can buy one to match the other. after school the girls stopped at the store which has been there for as long as Anne marie could remember and they found it closed"... this paragraph made me go wow, i think that mrs. Hirsch was gone with somthing to do with the solders and the war and thats why i was really amazed with it and i wanted to read more.

  13. I was reading my book on sunday and was looking back at all the chapters and the titles that they had, and i noticed that most of the titles were questions and some were statements or facts and references to the questions like telling you what's going to happen or hinting you on something telling you something i thought that this was very cool then wondering if it was trying to tell me something because i haven't seen any books that have questions as titles for the chapters.

  14. Pg: 13
"So she turned her again to the king, who was still alive, as Lise was not".
When I read this passage it got me thinking about how did Lise die and how did this happen?

    Pg: 53
" The men in his office, he said, making a face, smoked almost anything: sometimes dried weeds rolled in paper, and the smell was terrible".
When I read that sentence, I was like OOH WOW they smoked weed in WW2.

  15. Chapter.9 and 10 I felt confused at the whole part where it was talking about the "Great Aunt Brite" I was wondering why they were lying and why Ellen"s parents were at this "funeral". I felt this way because Anne-marie was confused and Uncle Henrik said "Sometimes it is easier to be brave without knowing all the facts. I started to question the whole story when i read about this fake funeral,I was thinking, if Anne-marie has no Aunt brite then who is in the casket? Why did she not know some of the people ho were sitting in her Uncle's house?

    @Grizzly bear fang
It wasn't weed the drug it was weeds that you find on the ground that they rolled up in paper after they dried them out.

@epicgamer11 The O is like that because it is a name of a street in denmark so it's just the way that their O's are in Denmark, or possibly German.

When I read this I thought of the previous things that happen such as Lise being dead, grandparents being dead. Then I thought to my self "WOW she has a lot of dead relatives".

  19. @bling bling What they are saying his that instead of the king dying that they would die instead of him. If everyone in the country would die for him that means that he means a lot to his country and that he has kept his country safe and free but does it stay that way, what happens to the Jews, Ellen her mother and father, where do they go how do they get there do they stay alive or no? There are so many ways the story could end, how do you think it will end?

@grizzly bear fang Her family has lived there for many many years and their families were so big and the country isn't incredibly wealthy so the people only live to around 70 maybe.

Both of you need to focus on what is important in that part of the story? How is it funny that they are shoving the kittens head in the water bowl? Why are they doing that? More things to think about. I thought that that wasn't very nice to force the kitten to drink the water. What is the kitten wasn't thirsty?

First of all how did Peter get captured?
Somewhere in the middle of the book Annemarie had to give the package that had the handkerchief to her Uncle.
How did the Scientists create the handkerchief?
Finally how did the handkerchief mess with the dogs nose?

  43. Chapter 5
This chapter has really grabbed my attention with all of its details and that it is so easy to follow.
I have a text to text connection because Ellen had to be Lise (Annemarie's sister) to make it like she is not one of the Rosens.
Because she is being Lise, it's like she is hiding. This is because she is in a disguise. So she is hiding from the soldiers.
In Jacob's rescue, he had to hide in places so he would not be found by the Nazi soldiers.

  44. SMALL SPOILER ALERT!!!
"How did your sister die, Annemarie?" Ellen asked suddenly. "I remember when it happened. And I remember the funeral-it was the only time I have ever been in a Lutheran church. But I never knew just what happened."
"i don't know exactly," Annemarie confessed. "She and Peter were out somewhere together, and then there was a telephone call, that there had been an accident. Mama and Papa rushed to the hospital-remember, your mother came and stayed with me and Kristi? Kristi was already asleep and she slept right through everything, she was so little then. But I stayed up, and I was with your mother in the living room when my parents came home in the middle of the night. And they told me that Lise had died.
    -Page 40-41

If I was in the position that Annemarie was in, I would be crying. Reading this passage almost made my heart skip a beat and I almost cried.
I can not imagine being Annemarie and having to stay with my friends parents and when my parents got home they told me that my sister has died. That would be a very hard position to be in.
Wouldn't this not happen if Lise and Peter were outside together that late at night?
I remember when I heard that something has happened to my cousin. He did not die but I was heart broken because I was told that he has broken a lot of bones.
